Suiting and Trench Coat Cloths ‘Unlike Any Other’

A collection of cotton cloth ‘unlike any other’, which is ideal for tailored suits and trench coats, has been launched by a British heritage textiles brand.

Huddersfield-based cloth merchant Dugdale Bros and Co has launched a range of fabrics, named Cottonopolis, made with English Fine Cotton yarns.

Dugdale‘s Simon Glendenning says that not only is it the first tailoring collection to be entirely made in Britain for decades, but also the cloths themselves are unique.

“This collection is unlike anything else that’s available – for its story and provenance, as well as for the superiority of the cloth.

“Cotton cloths can be boring and plain, but these are different. This is a truly exciting and innovative cotton range.”

Difference in the detail

The collection consists of 25 colour variations of yarn dyed cloth, made with our premium Extra Long Staple (ELS) Supima yarns, which were dyed at Blackburn Yarn Dyers.

They were woven at John Spencer Textiles, in Burnley, with different coloured yarns on the warp and weft, lending them an almost ‘two-tone’ effect.

Simon says it’s this technique that sets the collection apart from other cotton cloth collections, which are often ‘piece dyed’ in one block colour after weaving.

A water-resistant finish was added at H & C Whitehead, in Brighouse, meaning the collection was manufactured from start to finish in the North of England.

A prevailing cloth legacy

Dugdale Bros & Co are the last remaining independently-owned cloth merchant in the centre of Huddersfield, and are renowned for their impressive collection of high quality cloth, which they supply to the finest tailors, designers, couturiers and retailers throughout the world.

Launched on Monday, the collection has already seen a huge amount of interest, particularly from Saville Row and fashion houses in France, Italy and as far as Australasia.

Simon added: ““This is a pivotal time for UK manufacturing, and we’re thrilled to be among the makers that are helping to drive the country’s export market forward.

“We chose to work with English Fine Cottons on ‘Cottonopolis’ because their values and dedication to quality align closely with ours.

“The finished range is a testament to the North of England’s prevailing cloth-making legacy, and we’re delighted to be able to supply this 100% British-made collection to tailors and fashion houses around the world.”

English Fine Cottons’ general manager, Andy Ogden, said: “We were very excited to see this collection come to fruition – the quality of the finished cloths is impressive.

“We’re delighted that the rebirth of cotton-spinning in the UK means manufacturers have been able to work together in a way they haven’t been able to in decades.

“And together, we are producing fantastic quality British-made products, which is what the consumer wants.”
